Beschreibung

Recently, much scientific interest has been converging on writing and reading comprehension skills. Knowing that multivariate analysis of variance and covariance are often used to test for differences among two, three or more means without increasing the risk of Type I errors, the aim of this analysis was to compare the ability to perform different reading and writing activities that are related to the students' use of memory, senses, and observation. The database used provided the results of a survey of 303 students on their reading and writing abilities. The overall research question was as follows: In which of the three ability groups (i.e., low, medium, or high) did college students have the highest reading and/or writing abilities? In Chapter I of this paper, the study design and descriptive statistics are reviewed. Chapter II simplifies the concept of formulating research questions and hypotheses, and a series of t-tests are carried out to support the findings of multivariate analyses. Chapter III presents the results of MANOVA and MANCOVA employed to answer the research questions. In Chapter IV, the findings are synthesized and discussed, whereas in Chapter V, the conclusions draws are summarized. Obviously, this sample revealed that the students' ability group had a significant effect on their reading comprehension, ability to copy words, composition, and writing words, i.e., those in the high ability group showed higher reading comprehension and ability to writing words than their counterparts in low or average ability groups, and those in the high ability group had significantly higher ability to copy words and composition than those in the low ability group. Moreover, when the effect of the Raven Standard Progression Matrices (which is similar to an IQ test and used to conduct pretests) was removed, the effect of ability groups on ability of composition did not attain significance, the amount of the variation accounted for by the model increased, the effect size became significantly larger, and the overall power stronger.
