Beschreibung

This book features papers from the biannual Forum on Philosophy, Engineering & Technology meeting, fPET 2016. It examines how engineering has entered a post-normal state, which challenges its identity as a profession and its role in society. In order to cope with the increasing dynamic and intransparency of the social, political, and economic constraints of technical change, engineers nowadays have to work in close collaboration with other stakeholders in the design and implementation of new technical solutions. The papers give an overview of this phenomenon and explore its consequences in different directions. The contributors outline a basis for a revised understanding of engineering that will be more suitable to face current and upcoming developments in the field. Coverage considers the following questions: Is engineering still able to provide mature solutions to current problems? Are these solutions robust to change and how can we assess this? To what extent can technical and economic developments be separated from each other and what approaches are able to capture both at the same time? How do the contents, curricula, and methods of engineering education have to change? Are there alternate approaches to engineering as it has emerged from Western societies during the last centuries? Where can these alternatives be found?
