Autorenportrait

William Henry Hudson was an eminent author and naturalist born on August 4, 1841, in Quilmes, near Buenos Aires, Argentina, to American parents of English descent. Hudson's profound connection with nature was rooted in his upbringing amid the South American pampas, and this bond profoundly influenced both his literary and naturalist works. He moved to England in 1869, where he lived for the remainder of his life, and became a British citizen in 1900.In his literary endeavors, Hudson distinguished himself with a style marked by a delicate fusion of natural history and fiction, infusing his rich descriptions of landscapes and wildlife with a poetic sensibility. A noteworthy example of his narrative approach is seen in 'Idle Hours in a Library' (1899), a collection of essays reflecting on a broad range of topics and authors, approached with the keen observational skills of a naturalist combined with the reflective qualities of a philosopher. Hudson's prose often evoked a sense of nostalgia for the fast-disappearing wilderness. Besides his contributions to literature, Hudson's influence extended to his founding role in the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. He passed away on August 18, 1922, in London, leaving a legacy celebrated for its lyrical celebration of the natural world and its inhabitants (Garnett, 1925; Roberts, 1946).
