Autorenportrait

Reuben Archer Torrey (18561928), better known as R. A. Torrey, was a significant American evangelist, pastor, educator, and writer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Torrey graduated from Yale University and Yale Divinity School, after which he undertook evangelistic work. Following an experience as a superintendent of the Congregational City Missionary Society of Minneapolis, he was personally selected by the renowned evangelist D.L. Moody to head the Bible Institute of the Chicago Evangelization Society (now Moody Bible Institute), demonstrating the depth of his commitment to biblical education and evangelical outreach. Torrey's literary contributions are extensive, with his writings promoting a fundamentalist interpretation of Christianity grounded in the inerrancy of the Bible and the importance of personal salvation. One of his many works, 'How to Succeed in the Christian Life' (1894), offers practical advice for new believers, emphasizing devotional habits, prayer, and the personal study of Scripture. A considered classic, this book is indicative of Torrey's approach to the Christian life, blending doctrinal clarity with accessible, action-oriented guidance. Beyond his own writings, Torrey also played a pivotal role in compiling 'The Fundamentals', a series of essays considered the foundation of the early fundamentalist movement. His influence extended globally through his world preaching tours, his advocacy of the Keswick Higher Life movement, and his affiliation with the World's Christian Fundamentals Association. Torrey's impact on evangelical Christianity was significant and his works continue to be read and appreciated by those within the Christian tradition.
