Autorenportrait

Baroness Emma Magdolna Rozália Mária Jozefa Borbála "Emmuska" Orczy de Orci, known professionally as Baroness Orczy, was a distinguished Hungarian-British novelist and playwright. Born in Tarnaörs on September 23, 1865, she gained literary acclaim as the author of the classic adventure tale 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' (1905). However, her repertoire extended beyond this singular success, including 'The Laughing Cavalier' (1913), a historical novel set in the 17th century that illustrates her mastery in weaving romance and suspense into the tapestry of European history. Baroness Orczy's literary style is characterized by its rich descriptions, a flair for the dramatic, and an affinity for themes of aristocratic heroism and intrigue. Her narratives frequently engage with the concept of nobility, both of birth and character, manifesting in the gallant and resourceful protagonists she crafts. 'The Laughing Cavalier,' which precedes the events of 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' but was written later, showcases these thematic concerns, exploring the spirited adventures of its eponymous Dutch hero during the tumultuous times of the Thirty Years' War. Orczy's contribution to the genre of historical fiction was significant, not only providing entertainment but also offering insights into the political and social landscapes of her settings. She passed away in London on November 12, 1947, leaving behind a legacy of adventure and romance that continues to captivate readers around the world.
